Flossing with Braces Temecula, CA
One of the most difficult things to adjust to while wearing braces is to properly brush and floss. Getting used to having metal brackets attached to your teeth can be difficult.
Orthodontics change how we speak and how we eat. Anytime we bump our mouth can cause pain because the brackets and wires poke into the inside of our lips and cheek. While we eventually can adjust to all of that, it does take time.
Food can also get stuck in between the wires and brackets (not to mention your teeth) and is an important thing to watch out for.
The benefits of traditional braces greatly outweigh the maintenance routine that goes with braces. Anyone wanting to straighten their teeth or fix their misaligned jaw will have to adjust to the maintenance that comes with them. There are several tips available that can help with caring for your teeth while wearing braces, like how to properly floss and brush. Come see us at Roncone Orthodontics to find out more.
Tips for Braces Care
An Electric Toothbrush Helps with Brushing and Flossing
Believe it or not one of the easiest things to do to improve a patient's ability to brush and floss while wearing braces is to purchase an electric toothbrush. They are an excellent tool to use. While getting the brush head at the correct angle of a manual toothbrush can be difficult, with the electric toothbrush it is easy.
The electric toothbrush not only helps brush the teeth, removing bacteria and food debris from surfaces, but also massages gums to keep a healthy blood flow.
What is a Wisp?
Another tool to use is a wisp. This is a disposable toothbrush. It is easy to conceal because of its small size and even has breath freshener and toothpaste already applied for ease of use.
Additional Tools for Flossing
There are a few different things a patient can do to make it flossing easier with braces. One is to use an Orthopick flosser. This tool allows easy access between the teeth to remove bacteria and leftover food.
Also, a soft gum pick can be used to help with flossing. It hinders the buildup of bacteria between the teeth and braces. Flossing can cause irritation and pain to some patients who wear braces, so this is another option.
Dental Wax for Comfort
Wax might seem like an odd tool to name here but it can be used for a variety of situations to help with the discomfort of wearing braces. Any point in the mouth which has pain or discomfort can be covered by wax and helped. It can stop the irritation of the lips and cheeks by putting a layer of protection between the soft tissue and the braces.
