Benefits of Braces

A smile with the braces.Braces are an orthodontic tool used to correct issues with both tooth and jaw alignment. More children than adults wear them although the number of adults has been steadily climbing for the last three decades. While most people picture a child with a mouth full of metal braces, the face of those using orthodontic appliances has changed. More adults than ever have chosen to correct their crooked teeth or a misaligned jaw. How many people do you suppose are wearing braces at any one time? In the United States alone, there are four million people wearing braces at any one time.

While patients might choose braces to straighten their teeth and realign their jaw, they need to realize that they cannot correct orthodontic issues overnight. Teeth are moved slowly into their desired position. This is the way braces are designed and the way they have to work in order to have a lasting effect. It might mean that braces will have to be worn for an extended period of time, but the end result will be straight teeth and a properly aligned jaw. It improves overall dental health and jaw functionality.

Options for Braces

There are many different choices available for patients with regard to the type and style of braces they can choose from. Conventional braces are still the most widely used of all types. They use brackets glued to teeth with wires linking them together to apply pressure to the teeth. There are some braces now that do not use wires or brackets at all. They use alignment trays which can be removed for brushing and flossing or to eat. These trays are clear so they can go unnoticed when out in public. There are also ceramic braces which can be tinted to either blend in with the surrounding teeth color or in bright colors as a form of expression.

For those patients who want to find out more why not come in to see us at Roncone Orthodontics. We will go over the options and talk about which type of braces suits your situation best.

The Different Types of Braces

All braces, regardless of the type or style utilize constant, gentle pressure. It does not matter if this pressure is applied through brackets and wires or if it is applied with clear plastic alignment trays. They all follow the same basic principle. They use pressure.

Ceramic braces have become one of the most widely used types of braces. They have become more popular than traditional metal braces with younger patients. It allows the brackets to be either clear to appear invisible or tinted to blend in with the color of the teeth. These are much less noticeable than the metal braces. Some patients choose to tint their bright colors to make them an accessory to their appearance. Typically, ceramic braces need to be worn from anywhere between 18 and 36 months to complete treatment.

Benefits of Braces

Regardless of the types of braces you choose, they offer many benefits to your smile:
•  Tooth alignment - straight teeth bring about a symmetrical smile
•  Jaw alignment - allows you to have a strong and healthy bite
•  A variety of braces are available to treat various conditions and misalignments - underbites, overbites, crossbites, crowded teeth, and gapped teeth
•  Trusted treatment - braces have been around for decades and are a tried and true choice for straightening teeth
•  Lasting results - wearing retainers after your treatment with braces will ensure the new alignment of your teeth stays in place
