Orthodontic Tips for Athletes

Posted on 11/15/2024 by Roncone Orthodontics

Wear a Mouthguard

Have your orthodontist make you a custom mouth guard. It will fit perfectly over your braces to protect them and your teeth. The mouthguard helps to cushion against hits to the face. Wear it any time you play contact sports or take part in activities where you might fall or crash into something.

Avoid Hard or Sticky Foods Before Sports

Right before games or practices, stick to soft, nutritious foods like bananas, scrambled eggs, or smoothies that are unlikely to damage braces. Skip snacks like nuts, seeds, popcorn, or sticky candies, which can bend wires and dislodge brackets.

Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water before, during, and after exercise. Dehydration causes a dry mouth, raising the risks of braces irritation and canker sores. Water also rinses away food particles and bacteria that promote tooth decay.

Wear a Helmet

In addition to a mouthguard, wear a properly fitted helmet for activities like bike riding, skiing, skating, horseback riding, or contact sports. A helmet protects your head and face from traumatic injury.

Remove Loose Appliances

If a wire or bracket becomes loose during a game, remove it immediately if possible. This prevents the hardware from poking your cheek or getting swallowed. Afterward, call your orthodontist to schedule a repair appointment.

Rinse After Sports

After physical activity, rinse your mouth well with water or an antiseptic rinse. This removes plaque and debris and helps prevent bacteria buildup around braces. Do a quick visual inspection of your braces in the mirror to spot any new damage.
