How to Handle Orthodontic Emergencies

Posted on 11/1/2024 by Roncone Orthodontics

Poking Wire or Bracket

If a poking wire is causing pain, use orthodontic relief wax to smoothly cover the irritating part. To temporarily reposition a poking bracket, gently push it back in place using an eraser on the end of a pencil. Never attempt to cut or remove any wires yourself.

Loose Bracket or Band

Use tweezers to safely remove any detached bands or brackets. Saving the appliance piece will allow your orthodontist to reattach it. If you cannot remove the sharp edge, cover it with relief wax. Leave wires in place and avoid chewing on that side until it is repaired.

Loose Wire

If a wire becomes loose, use tweezers to gently slide it through the teeth and brackets until it comes out. Do not cut the wire by yourself. Carefully moving the wire to a safe spot will prevent it from poking your mouth. Let your orthodontist know so they can put it back in place.

Mouth Sores

Rinse with warm salt water to soothe mouth irritation or sores from braces rubbing. Dab on orthodontic wax to cushion any braces parts that are poking or rubbing. Take over-the-counter pain medication as needed for discomfort. Sores should improve within a few days.

Lost or Broken Appliance

If an entire orthodontic appliance detaches or breaks, careful handling is key. Avoid swallowing or aspirating small parts. Protect your mouth from sharp edges with wax. Save all parts to bring to your orthodontist for repair.

Injured Mouth or Gums

Rinse with warm salt water for any tears, cuts, or bleeding in your mouth caused by the braces. Use light pressure from a gauze pad or cloth to stop any bleeding. Severe lacerations, split lips, or puncture wounds require prompt medical attention.
